What Is A RV Mattress: How Is It Different From A Regular Mattress?

RV Mattress

It is estimated that over 11 million households in the United States own a RV. RVs are becoming more comfortable and even luxurious. You can sometimes feel like you are small, comfortable on wheels.

RVs these days come with comfortable seats, a small dining area, a kitchenette, a small refrigerator, a toilet and ample storage space. Yet, with all these great amenities, RVs usually come with a thin and uncomfortable mattress.

Most RV owners choose to upgrade the standard RV mattress to a more comfortable mattress to make road trips that much more enjoyable.

RV mattresses are generally smaller than regular mattresses due to space and size constraints on an RV. When you are looking for a mattress to replace your current RV mattress, you need to make sure that you know the type of mattress you are replacing along with its dimensions.

Types of RV Mattresses

RV Mattresses come in nine different sizes. Let’s look at each one individually:

RV Bunk Mattress

These are very popular as they save the most amount of space in a RV and they allow for multiple people to sleep comfortably while on the road. Bunk mattresses are similar in size to twin mattresses and are designed for one person.

RV Full Mattress

You will usually find a RV full mattress as a pullout on a sofa bed. These mattresses are slightly larger than a standard double bed.

RV Three-Quarter Mattress

Three-Quarter mattresses are usually meant for two kids but they can also be used for one adult. Three-quarter mattresses are just smaller than a full size mattress.

RV Short Queen Mattress

The RV Short Queen is made for 2 adults and they are usually 4 to 5 inches shorter in length than a regular queen mattress.

RV Queen Mattress

The RV queen mattress is the same size as a regular queen mattress. This is the most popular size for RVs and you will have the most choices when shopping for a RV queen mattress.

RV Short King Mattress

The RV Short King is made for 2 adults who want a little more space. They are usually 4 to 5 inches shorter in length than a regular king mattress.

RV King Mattress

Just like the RV queen mattress, the RV king mattress is the next most popular mattress for RVs. The king mattresses are usually about 4 inches narrower than a regular king mattress. This is done as a space saving measure.

RV Eastern King Mattress

The RV eastern king mattress is designed for larger RVs and there is no size difference between a RV eastern king and a regular eastern king. An eastern king is commonly wider than a regular king mattress.

RV California King Mattress

The RV california king mattress is also designed for larger RVs and there is no size difference between a RV california king and a regular california king. The california king is generally longer than a regular king mattress.

Finding The Right RV Mattress

Knowing the dimension of your RV mattress is important but it is only one of the options available to you. RV mattresses come in different heights which can often equate to more or less comfort.

The standard mattress height for most RVs is 4 inches. Some manufacturers provide mattresses that are 8 inches to 12 inches high. Check the overall dimensions of the RV bed space to make sure they can accommodate the right height.

There are also different types of RV mattresses when it comes to the material they are made out of. In this case, they are similar to regular mattresses. RV mattresses are made out of traditional coil springs, memory foam, gel infused-memory foam and there are hybrid mattresses as well.

The type of mattress material you choose will depend on what kind of sleep you are looking for. If you want to see the different types of RV mattresses that are available you can check out our reviews of the Best RV Mattresses - Sleep and Adventure Awaits.
